Steve Hunziker chalked this representation of Christ at a Union Gospel Mission church event.

On a recent Sunday evening, Union Gospel Mission Church was blessed by Brother Steve Hunziker and his performance of a unique chalk talk. It was my first ever time actually seeing one done, and I was expecting just a chalkboard and some chalk, a good Gospel message, and a finished picture with Christ on the cross.

But what all those present actually got was a multimedia event. Steve had all the stuff that chalk talks have traditionally been made of and then some: there was a movie, a film soundtrack, and Brother Steve’s simple explanation of the plan of salvation to go along with his chalk drawings beginning with Mary and the Christ child, Christ as a young boy, His teaching and healing ministry, the entrance to Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, the various trials before the leaders of the nation and Pilate, the Roman governor — and ending with the Savior’s face dripping blood from the crown of thorns on His head. There was even a rousing finale of Steve’s dancing a kind of jig at the conclusion. That last touch was indeed a sight to see. The end result, however, … was not only moving, but effectual. Two people that evening received Christ as their Savior at the invitation. Through God’s working on him during the presentation, one of our men on the program discovered, that he really didn’t know Christ in a personal way. We always try and make sure the men we put on our GRACE discipleship program are saved, but oftentimes they aren’t.

There have been many who have actually come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ after becoming disciples on our program. The other soul saved was a little neighborhood girl whose big sister had been saved just a few weeks previous during Brother Steve’s more traditional chalk talk.

The evening was one to remember, and we want to thank the Lord for allowing us to be participants in His great redemptive plan. Brother Jon and I also want to thank Brother Steve Hunziker for his seemingly tireless work of soul-winning. The work he is doing with his multimedia chalk talk is just one more evidence of Steve’s love for the Lord, the gospel and the lost.
